Salman - Katrina spotted on a date at a Bandra cafe

Love birds Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif were spotted at a Bandra, Mumbai cafe on Sunday June 28th evening. Our source who was incidentally present at the Salt Water Café, the newly opened café ahead of Lilavati Hospital, Bandra, revealed, “Salman and Katrina arrived together at around 6pm. Both were looking extremely happy and it appeared as if they had arrived to celebrate the success of Katrina’s new release New York. She was smiling nonstop while talking to him. The people around them were left completely star struck and no one dared to disturb the lovers.” The source further added, “When any one around would stare for long at Katrina, Salman would stare back at him/her. Generally the two used to be often seen at the coffee shops near Salman’s Bandra Bandstand house such as Café Coffee Day or Barista but may be they came here because being a Sunday those places would have been extremely crowded.” Both were there for over an hour.

New York Movie emerges a HIT at Box Office

If the weekend response to Yash Raj Films’ latest release New York Movie Box office
NEW YORK is anything to go by, the film is all set to enjoy
at least a HIT status for itself at the box office. This Kabir
Khan directed film has taken an extremely heartening start at the box office and is seeing a rapid growth in positive word of mouth with every passing show. The film has done wonders at the box office and has clearly seen one of the most positive box office responses of the year 2009 so far. By the time first show of the film came to it’s conclusion on Friday, picture was crystal clear that this John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan starrer was en route to the winning post. The opening shows occupancy ranged from 60%-70% which was quite positive considering the fact that with an exception of big star cast films, majority of movies start warming up only by evening shows. However, the trend was different in case of NEW YORK which got into third gear from the time advance booking counters opened and by the time it was evening, word had spread that NEW YORK was a quality film waiting to be lapped up. No wonder, the evening and night shows were houseful all over and the scene only got better over the remainder of the weekend. After ages, one got to see Houseful signs at multiplexes, something that was missing ever since the year had begun. With the film managing to take the best start of the year so far, it is all set to surpass the opening of CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA and DELHI 6. Not that these two films did much wonders at the box office but on absolute terms, while CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA had boasted of 26 crores in the first week, DELHI 6 had netted a mere 22 crores. In this regard, NEW YORK is clearly expected to surpass these figures. Even if that doesn’t happen and NEW YORK falls short of a couple of crores or so, it would still be a remarkable feat since the film hasn’t seen a huge opening like the aforementioned films. The point is, this Kabir Khan directed film has finally broken the bad spell at the box office and brought cheers back on the faces of producers, exhibitors, distributors and of course the audiences. As for the actors, whether it is John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukesh or Katrina Kaif - each of them has come up with his/her career best performance in the film; something that is reflected in the manner in which audiences as well as critics are appreciating the film. In a sensitive film that keeps it’s drama and thrills intact, it was a thin rope that the actors had to walk. However, they have done exceedingly well in surpassing the expectations even when a powerhouse performer Irrfan Khan, who can seldom put a foot wrong, was amidst them. The other release of the week, RUNWAY, has been a miserable disaster though and it won’t be surprising if theaters screening the film (in the limited prints that it has arrived) replace it with NEW YORK as the week begins. This writer just had two people for company in the entire auditorium on the first day of the film’s screening which clearly tells the tale. Starring one film old Amarjeet along with Tulip Joshi, the film is a terrible affair and only adds on to the long list of insignificant non-performers of the year so far.

Bollywood Actors step back into the past

Bollywood ActorsIt was all about looking into future for Akshay Kumar
(8X10 Tasveer), Neil Nitin Mukesh (Aa Dekhen Zara), Madhavan (13 B), Jackky Bhagnani (Kal Kissne Dekha) and Hurman Baweja (Love Story 2050). However, when it comes to playing characters belonging to a different era, actors today are more excited about stepping into the 60s and the 70s and exploring the times that have been left behind. This is something pretty much visible in number of films that are either lined up for release or are currently under production. These are ‘Love Aaj Kal’, ‘Action Replay’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbai’. Informs Imtiaz Ali, the director of ‘Love Aaj Kal’, who has brought together the two eras in his third directorial outing after ‘Socha Na Tha’ and ‘Jab We Met’, “The film moves in two different era - 1965 and 2009 - almost simultaneously. They could well be termed as ‘Love Kal’ and ‘Love Aaj’ respectively due to their relevance with the characters and the time period involved. The story is told from the point of view of Veer and Jai respectively who have a different perspective about love and relationships.” Incidentally, Saif Ali Khan plays the double role of both Veer and Jai though Rishi Kapoor forms an important part in the entire narration that travels across London, San Francisco, Delhi and Calcutta. From the 60s, story moves to the 70s as Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai come together for ‘Action Replay’. The film is said to be going into two time zones - 1975 and the current times. Admits producer and director Vipul Shah, “Yes, the film is about a time travel tale. It also stars Randhir Kapoor who plays an important role in the film. Beyond that, I can’t reveal much about the film’s plotline.” Composer Pritam too confirms that ‘Action Replay’ is set in the 70s. “Yes, I have created compositions that completely go with the mood of the 70s. It has been a unique experience for me actually”, he says. Emraan Hashmi shares similar sentiments as well after briefly shooting for Milan Luthria directed ‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbai’. Excited about finding himself in an underworld setup belonging to the 70s, he says, “It’s good to be stepping into an era when underworld had just started making it’s presence felt. Milan is coming up with entirely new presentation of what crime was back then.” He is impressed with the way the film has been shot so far. “‘Once Upon a Time in Mumbai is an entirely new way of narrating a story and such kinds of scripts are Milan’s forte. You can see that he is all pumped up when it comes to high testosterone male oriented films like the ones he has directed in the past (’Kachche Dhaage’ or ‘Deewar - Let’s Bring Our Heroes Home’). The 70s flavour is only adding to the entire fun.” The film sees Emraan coming together with Ajay Devgan for the first time. Also leading ladies Kangna Ranaut and Prachi Desai are going all out to get that perfect 70s look. Meanwhile Bollywood continues to be inspired by the 70s even though the film may be set in the current times. Two years back Sriram Ragahvan came up with Neil Nitin Mukesh starrer ‘Johnny Gaddar’ which was a clear homage to the action masala potboilers from the 70s. In a few weeks from now, Vishal Bhardwaj would be unleashing his ‘Kaminey’. Going by the look, treatment and music of the film, yet again Bollywood seems to be searching into the past. In fact makers of ‘Kaminey’ have been making no bones about the fact that this Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka starrer belongs to the caper genre, something that has been mastered by Hollywood film makers like Guy Ritchie, Quentin Tarantino and Tony Scott. Incidentally each of these directors has been known for the 70s treatment imparted into their films. No wonder, Vishal Bhadrwaj instructed his entire cast and crew of the film to watch caper classics like ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’, ‘Snatch’, ‘Pulp Fiction’ and ‘True Romance’ to catch the finer nuances of a caper thriller. That’s because each of these films has traditionally acted as text book material not just for India but even West when it comes to caper thrillers. “This is why Vishal wanted to be sure that everyone from cast as well as crew member gets familiar with the entire idea of story telling when it comes to a caper thriller”, informs a prominent crew member who was assigned this ‘homework’ just like the rest, “There is a certain ’sur’ in movies belonging to this genre and one miss here or there and the film risks falling flat on it’s face.” Well, that’s the last thing a film maker would want, especially when there is so much of knowledge from the era gone by out there in open to learn and get inspired from.

No Salman Khan in Katrina Birthday Party

/photo.cms?msid=4716763

After last year's bad experienceKatrina Kaif has decided to celebrate her birthday withher family in London. The actress is looking forward to meeting her family, but didn't reveal whether beau Salman Khan will be with her or not.

Katrina will turn 25 on July 16 and this time the actress, who is said to be under a lot of external and internal pressure, is determined to make her birthday a happy, stress-free and comfortable occasion.

Katrina will take off for a rare full-family reunion in London this July, to coincide with her birthday. She doesn't confirm the birthday, but admits that she's planning a holiday with family in July.

"I've been burning the midnight oil to make myself free for my family. I'm exhausted and stressed. And I can't wait to go home. Though I've met parts of my family on every visit home all of us eight siblings have not been together in nine years... can you believe it! I really want to do this," Katrina, who has earned rave reviews for her performance in just released "New York", told IANS.

Katrina is the middle sister among the seven girls of the Kaif family. She has always been the apple of the eye and it was very traumatic for her to wrench herself away from the family cocoon in London and make a career on her own in Mumbai.

According to close friends, Katrina was petrified of the isolation here. That's why when Salman Khan's family took her in their fold, she was indebted to them.

Last year Salman created a major embarrassment for her by picking up a fight with Shah Rukh Khan.

After the incident, is Katrina trying hard to gently move away from her adopted family?

"I'm just so looking forward to being with all my sisters. My brother is also taking the time off to be in London for the first time in years with all of us sisters. I've been with some of my siblings in London. But never all. It's not holiday for me. It's a necessity. And nothing can stop from making it happen," she said.

The actress' popularity soared after the success of " Namaste London " and " Singh Is Kinng ".

Bollywood remembers Michael Jackson

Majority of them have been known for their dance moves. And most of them have been inspired by the ‘King of Pop’. Generation X remembers Michael Jackson as he takes a journey to the heavenly abode. Hurman Baweja - I can’t believe he is no more. It’s too much of a shock. I was looking forward to seeing him on stage in London in August. For me he will always be alive. I have seen him live on stage before, I hear him practically everyday either in my car or on my iPod. He is my dancing Guru whom I have watched and learnt from. He is a genius. Here is to a Legend. May his soul rest in peace! He will be missed! Tusshar Kapoor - It;s very depressing to hear this since I have spent most of my childhood years listening to his music and watching his videos. He has been the ultimate icon of pop for me and his death has made me realise the harsh uncertainties of life. Koena Mitra - End of en era. Showbiz has lost it’s best performance. Music has lost it’s bestseller. One of entertainment’s greatest icons is no more. He was ridiculously gifted and was amongst the world’s most beloved figures. Now on there will be no Jackson Five reunion, no such music. But the legacy he leaves behind is deep. The ‘Thriller’ may be gone but the ‘History’ remains. May he rest in peace! Eesha Koppikhar - You created history with your music. I will always remember you as the ‘King of Pop’. As rightly stated by all the news channels, 25th June will always be remembered as a black day in the world of music. Minissha Lamba - His music was an integral part of my growing up years. His demise has come as a shock. He deserved a lot more in the last few years of his life! Sonu Sood - I feel it’s a big loss. Remember strongly that as a kid, he was the only star that we all knew. We used to practice his moves. Wish he lived for another hundred years! Kunal Khemu - The news came as a shock to me. I have been a die hard fan of the ‘King of Pop’ and will always be. Anybody who has heard the word ‘dance’ has also heard the name Michael Jackson. An icon, a legend who will always live in the hearts of his fans and keep inspiring millions like me who started dancing because he made it look so good. Neil Nitin Mukesh - The man who taught the world to dance has left us with his memories. It’s a great loss! Aftab Shivdasani - ‘Very very very sad’ - that’s all I can say if I have to describe how I feel at the moment. A true inspiration for not only the music world but to almost every other person. I was one of his biggest fans and am very sad to hear about his death. I was looking forward to his concert in London. Chitrangda Singh - I am surprisingly much more affected than I thought I could be by the demise of a star. I am crying in my heart. It’s all the memories he has given us. He was a rare genius. Wish we could save him! Celina Jaitley - It’s shocking. I was planning to go for his last concert to London. I have been a die hard fan and I still can’t believe that he is gone. Tanushree Dutta - I loved his music from time to time. It’s a huge loss to the music industry. Udita Goswami - May his soul rest in peace. He wasn’t the icon he used to be anymore after all the mess he got into. He was still trying to get out of it though. May be this was the time. His music will always be missed. And yes, there won’t be another Michael Jackson ever! Bollywood film makers remember Michael Jackson Michael Jackson’s magic was such that every film maker from present or a generation earlier was inspired by his work. While making films, they have at least once been inspired by the genius’ work and incorporated a move or two of his in their songs. They come together to mourn the loss the King who has left a vast repertoire of work behind him that would be remembered forever. Anurag Basu - People of my generation have grown up on his music. Who can forget ‘Billie Jean’, ‘Thriller’ and so many other blockbusters that he gave? In fact I remember how around a year back, in October 2008, he happened to come to the place where we were shooting for ‘Kites’ in USA. He was there for some work of his own but when he got to know that a film from India was being shot there, he became curious. Hrithik and he also chatted for a while there was a mini mayhem as my crew went berserk with his presence. Such is the power of the man! Sujoy Ghosh - In the 80s, I have actually seen normal people on the streets trying to moon walk. Now in 2009, I have a ‘moon walk’ in my film. Post Presley, Michael Jackson was and is the only icon. Vivek Agnihotri - For my generation, we haven’t warmed up to anyone else but Jackson who moon walked. No one influenced us more than him. I have been to his concert and I must admit, I have never experienced anything more ecstatic than that. Nothing and no one can beat it. A phenomenon ended on 25th June. Milan Luthria - Legend and tragedy often go hand in hand. Madhur Bhandarkar - When he was alive, media hounded him day in and night out and didn’t allow him peace. There were issues being raised all over and his life was miserable. Today, we all are collectively praying for his soul to rest in peace. Isn’t that ironical? We have grown on his music. Who can forget his contribution over such a long period of time? He has truly been an iconic figure. Kunal Shivdasani - Michael Jackson is a legend and legends are never ‘no more’. They are for eternity and anyone who thinks otherwise can just BEAT IT! Raksha Mistry - We lost one of the most original icons of this century. He was truly one of the pioneers for blacks in the music industry. Sangeeth Sivan - Michael Jackson’s demise means the end of an ultimate performer! Louis Wilson - Michael Jackson - The guy who recorded songs on hearts and not on tapes! Suparn Verma - The King is dead. Long live the King. My generation has grown up to the music of the genius. He was a true showman. I was lucky enough to watch him perform LIVE in concert. It was such a spectacle whose memory I will take to my grave. He had mastered his craft and his genius will live on for decades through his work. Michael, thank you for the music! Vivek Sharma - He was the real immortal King of music. He taught us entertainment in the form of stage shows and videos. He will always exist in us. I saw his show in Mumbai and I am proud of the fact that I stood in queue for him for five hours! He will always remain our hearts forever! Anubhav Sinha - It’s a gamut of such varied emotions that I am feeling right now. Such people never die. They live on forever. He was a unique form of art that has abruptly ended. Rohit Jugraj - I was really shocked and pained by Michael Jackson’s sudden death. It felt as if an era has come to an end. He was a true superstar if there ever was one. May God bless him! And may God bless this world.

“Salman never watches any of Katrina Kaif’s Films”

Even as Bipasha Basu rushed back from Goa to Mumbai to watch her boyfriend John Abraham’s career-defining performance in New York, the film’s leading lady Katrina Kaif whose performance has been bathed in praise is yet to convince her companion to watch what the world is raving about . Yes, believe it or not, Salman has not watched New York as yet. Katrina hasn’t been able to convince him to do so. He won’t watch it now, he won’t watch later. Period. Says a close friend of Katrina, “It really really puzzles and hurts her as to why Salman chooses to ignore all her films. It isn’t as if he doesn’t watch any films. He does. But when it comes to Katrina he suffers from a mental blockade.” Apparently Salman doesn’t like the thought of watching his girlfriend share physical proximity with any of his co-stars. In fact, according to close friends even when she wears the slightest of revealing clothes in his presence Salman asks her to change. Ironically while Salman has probably never seen any of Katrina’s films, Katrina makes it a point to watch all of his films. Says the friend, “She doesn’t miss any of Salman’s films. Whether it’s a premiere or just a regular screening Katrina is there to support anything that Salman does.” Apparently Katrina is trying hard to convince Salman to watch New York. But with the John Abraham factor looming large over New York the chances of getting her man to share her moment of glory seem rather dim.

In conversation with the VJ Ayushman and Nikhil

India’s Got Talent has started with a bang on Colors. The show is all about entertainment and talent on stage and to boost the energy of the contestants, it has two handsome hunks as host, Ayushman Khurana and Nikhil Chinnappa. In exclusive conversations, both the MTV VJ’s talks about the talent in the show and till what extent people can go to get the fame What is your role as a host in this show? Nikhil: We are the story tellers; the one who is responsible for bringing out the stories behind the act of the talent. That’s it this is what we do. I forget we also make sandwiches. Ayushman: We are not just normal host- host but are acting as the friends of contestants to encourage and back them. We have total different roles to play in this show. Were you present at the auditions that took place across the country? Both: Yes we were and it was an amazing experience. Nikhil: We would like to see all the people who came for auditions to get selected. Many a times there were disagreement between us and judges. Ayushman: We use to give some comments and it was most of the times politically incorrect. Were you emotionally attached to the contestants? Ayushman: Well naturally were as it’s our job. Apart from that it’s natural and human to see some acts on stage which triggers emotions. How do you handle the rejection of the contestants during the auditions? Nikhil: There is lot of disappointment and sometimes people do expect rejection to happen as some of the acts are disappointing. We try to encourage them by saying that this is not the end of the road and they should always have a passion in them even if they don’t have talent. Go and peruse that passion and then come back later. Is there a pyramid kind of format with every week’s eliminations and then a grand finale? Ayushman: Obviously we have auditioned 1000 of contestants and have seen their acts. We have shot listed 194 from which 40 will be selected and again the best will be selected from them for the semi-finals and finals. Next two stage will be when the voting will select through votings. Nikhil: It does actually have three layers, audition rounds then we have five semi finals rounds out of which the five finalists will be selected. The semi finals and finals are based on audience voting. In initial rounds they have to get through the judges and then the audience in the finale. How different it is to host this show than your other MTV shows? Ayushman: I think the only difference is the language, on MTV its English and Hinglish while on Colors it’s Hindi. We are enjoying as this beat is totally different. Nikhil: We get treated better on Colors, we have our own make up vans. It’s interesting… (Grins) Before going for the auditions all over the country did you guys were aware that India has got so much talent? Nikhil: I was amazed, I knew India is a big country and has lots of different kinds of food and clothes that people wear. This was the question in our mind of what kind of talents we are going to find, do we really have. I have followed the show internationally (Britain Got Talent) and have seen their act and was like will we find that in Indian too? Ayushman: India has got lots of culture and diversity in the country is amazing. In Delhi we have people performing Gatka where as in Chennai we saw people performing Kerela marshal art called Kalaripayattu. Though it is very similar forms but have their own touch. Nikhil: In the beginning of the show I could not have thought that India has got so much of talent but now that we have finished the audition round it has been outstanding. Which part of the country has amazed you most? Nikhil: Well I think it would be Bangalore as I am from the place and feel that everything that has come in India (talent) is from Bangalore. Ayushman: No it has to be Delhi. If you see the talents in the first episode they are from Delhi. Nikhil: No its Bangalore and that’s it. There is a show called ‘Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega’, and is on similar line of India’s Got Talent. So do you think that this can affect the popularity of your show? Nikhil: We are on MTV but it’s not the only music channel in India. All the music channels play music and have countdown shows. They have different shows, band they showcase, game show etc. What matter is the one who doing the best and the kind of production value that I have seen in this show is huge. The people, the judges, the scale, lightings, audience and the entire set up is something to be watched. It actually is India’s best talent hunt show and there is nothing like it. Ayushman: This show has a soul as it touches the heart of people and I feel its goanna be brilliant. Were there any moments in the show were judges disagreed with each other? Ayushman: I think Shekhar Kapoor and Kiron have different but logical opinions. Nikhil: This is also going to be a different show from all the other channels. The judges disagreeing with Shekar pointing out few points that he liked where as Kironji points out what she didn’t like. Both the points are valid and they will disagree with that. Talent is very subjective which is why there are three judges who brings in different point of views. Basically its two out of three decisions, if you get two yeses you go ahead and vice versa. What according to you will be the entertainment in that percent and the talent? Nikhil: It has to be entertaining. If I look at a particular act I should feel like watching it again. Is there medical supervision on the sets? Was there any accidents too? Both: All the time, there is doctor on standby and the ambulance too. There are some acts where they use fire and such props for which we are prepared. Yes there were few accidents but we cannot talk about that you better ask the channel. Nikhil: When people are doing dangerous things on stage it’s always a concern and when things don’t go according to the plans, you get worried. At the same time we know that everything will be done in a controlled environment. Do you think its right to encourage the dead define act as an entertainment? Nikhil: The question comes up of how you are encouraging it. All the issues faced by the youth today can be brought down to parenting. You always know what is right and wrong. If you are brought up properly by your parents it will show while making a choice. Like if you go out with your friends and they tell you to smoke, this is the time when you make a right decision if your parenting is right. If someone see anything on television and says want to try it knowing that it’s dangerous. Just because you saw it on TV and want to perform, it is where you can see the parenting. It’s easy for them to give out the responsibility by saying it’s the fault of that particular show on television. If you are brought up right you have the common sense to make a right choice. If you are performing such acts it means you playing stupid. This is not encouraged by programme as they clearly give the outline that the stunt performed by these people is under the supervision of professionals and don’t try this at home. After this some people try this then what to tell them. Do you think India’s Got talent will be successful in our country? This show will change the life of people and I think it will work in the Indian format too.

Rahman speaks on Michael Jackson

An R Rahman is shocked at the untimely passing away of Michael Jackson. “I am yet to find an artist with that energy, perfection and vision. He was one of the greatest musicians of our time. MJ for most of our generation was an icon who made uncompromising music.” Elaborating on me’s contribution to world music Rahman says, “He pushed the milestone of pop music to unbelievable levels through the 80s and 90s.” Rahman met MJ very recently for the first time. “I met him personally after the Oscars in Los Angeles and we vibed very well. He said that he loved India and the Indian people. He said he heard good things about me and he was praising the chord progression Of Jai Ho’s chorus.” Rahman was impressed by MJ’s exuberant adrenaline-pumping energy. MJ even danced for Rahman! “He was bursting with energy and told me that every dance move he did came from his soul and did a five -second stunning example. It was like a lightning strike,” says Rahman. They also spoke on global concerns. “He was concerned about developmental issues such as Global Warming and about wars and its damages to the human community. He asked me to compose a unity anthem on the likes of “We are the World” for him. I nodded in awe.” MJ introduced Rahman to his children. “He introduced me to his three lovely bright Kids. The kids told him, ‘I love you dad’ and he replied, ‘I love you more’ as a proud father. I wished him well for his concerts and he said, ‘God Bless you’. Growing pensive Rahman who recently lost a close musician –friend H Sridhar says, “After hearing the shocking news of me’s death I wished it was another rumor which Would fade away soon. It took me time to believe that he is no more. I remember, my late sound engineer Sridhar had brought me a video of the premiere of ‘Remember the Time’ when I was recording the track ‘Kadal Rojave’ for my first movie Roja. Seeing it inspired all of us that afternoon. Now, there is no Sridhar and no Jackson anymore.” Rahman closing lines on MJ are moving and yet hopeful. “I hope all of us value people’s existence more and respect them when they are alive. Life is short.Artists and their art live for ever. Jai Ho, MJ! We love you for your music, regardless of all the controversies!

Shakti Kapoor taunts media at an event

Shakti Kapoor it seems hasn’t yet forgotten the sting operation fiasco he was involved in few years back. He seems to be still nursing a grudge against the electronic media for the same. Or else what would explain his media taunting behaviour at a recent event. Shakti was invited as a guest for a private album music launch at a suburban Mumbai open air lounge bar recently. We were witness to his histrionics there. He arrived quiet late at the party when the event had already begun, so naturally there were lots of media – both electronic as well as print present and so also the invited guests. So when Shakti came on stage before saying anything else he began by stating, “There is so much media here that while coming from entry gate to the stage through the crowd, I felt as I if I was going through a jam packed local train. Now that I have arrived on stage it seems like I have traveled from Virar to Churchgate in a Mumbai local.” He continued, “Nowadays there are too many electronic media people present at events with their cameras, presenters and camera crews. I wonder why so many media people come for private album music launches and why are they missing at film events.” Now by that time since the cocktails had begun to be served to present guests, Shakti went on to taunt, “Mediawalo achchi piyo ya kharaab piyo magar jab bhi piyo fokat ki sharaab piyo.” Well after saying that along with the mandatory congratulatory messages for the music launch people he headed straight to the bar. Well Shakti you are hardly written or shown about doing anything good in the media so it is better to keep your mouth shut instead of going hammer and tongs at the media and inviting their more ire.

Shortkut is yet another cheating of the audience?

Shortkut is yet another cheating of the audience?Just when we thought, Bollywood filmmakers have finally decided to experiment with new subjects and give something fresh to their loyal audience, here comes a film that not only has a ‘con’ in its title but also actually aims to con the audience with its lifted plot line from a successful Hollywood film titled Bowfinger (1999) starring Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin and Heather Graham. But what is more surprising is that this film, Shortkut – The Con is On is produced by none other than actor Anil Kapoor who is now Hollywood bound and has given a critically acclaimed film like Gandhi My Father. The director of the Hollywood film is Frank Oz who’s another film Death at a Funeral has been ripped off as Daddy Cool by Indra Kumar. Reportedly, the makers of Death at a Funeral had threatened to sue Indra Kumar after they came to know about the story lifting. According to tabloid reports, a settlement was then reached between them and Indra Kumar had to shell out a couple of crores to save his face. We can only imagine what Anil Kapoor’s situation will be if the original producers in Hollywood find it out and slap a case of copyright violation on him claiming damages running into crores. He will not only get a bad lashing in Hollywood press but also in here. The very same critics who had heaped praises on his risk taking ability to make a brave film like Gandhi My Father will rip tore his copy cat production. The Hollywood comedy released in 1999 and had a down on luck producer Bobby Bowfinger (Steve Martin) after reading a script which a friend has written decides to take a last shot at fame and fortune. But the script is not that easy to sell, and a famous producer promises him to do it, but there is one condition: Kit Ramsey (Eddie Murphy), Hollywood’s number one star, has to be in it. So, Bobby tries his luck with Kit - who says no - and then decides to shoot the film himself. Together with the cheapest team available in Southern California, an aspiring beauty (Heather Graham) from Ohio, a diva who is just a little over the hill, a key-holding gofer from a major studio and a goon hired away from burger-flipping, Bobby sets out to shoot the science-fiction-film starring Kit Ramsey - who does not even know he’s being filmed. Now Shortkut has a similar setting with the film based in Bollywood town Mumbai and Akshaye playing the aspiring filmmaker roping in Arshad Warsi to play the lead role and Amrita Rao going ultra glam playing the wannabe actress just like Heather Graham. A Bollywood insider tells us, “Shortkut makers may claim their film is inspired from a Malayalam film but the fact remains the plot lines are quiet similar. Even its poster reveals this fact. One wonders why most actors when they turn producers can’t think of something original. Just last week news has leaked that Saif Ali Khan’s first production Love Aaj Kal too is a lift from a Taiwenese film, Hao De Shi Guang (Three Times). One also fails to understand when these actors put in so much money in their productions why can’t they spend some money more and come out with something really original and creative.” Shortkut is written by Anees Bazmee and directed by Neeraj Vora both successful scriptwriters of Bollywood so we are sure the copying must have been done masterfully. How much they are successful will be revealed on July 10th when their film releases! But one just hopes this conning the audience business should stop for once and all soon because like never before the West is looking at Bollywood. -

It’s a rainy wait for Emraan and Soha

Absurd as it may sound but the fact remains that Emraan Hashmi’s next release is stuck because rain Gods haven’t been kind to Mumbai this season. Since ‘Tum Mile’ is set a few years back in the times of infamous Mumbai floods, the makers want to shoot some scenes in natural rains. However, as the wait gets longer for the rainy season to kick start in Mumbai, Emraan Hashmi, Kunal Deshmukh (the film’s director) and other cast and crew members of the film have been left with no other choice but to adopt a wait and watch stand. "No, none of us have a date excuse this time around. We are willing to shoot for the film but just can’t do that", jokes Emraan, "Thankfully this time around the culprit is none other than the rain God himself." Producer Mukesh Bhatt doesn’t have much to worry though. Almost entire film has already been completed in a specially designed set that recreates the Mumbai flood scene. Pending a few stock shots of Mumbai being captured in the actual rain, the shooting of ‘Tum Mile’ is through and the film is gearing up for it’s final copy. "But then we don’t want to rush up things", details Emraan, "We want the final copy to look exactly that, i.e. a final copy. And for that, these shots form an integral part. While a couple of them would require both me and Soha being trapped in rain, a few only need the Mumbai city in background without any of us principal characters." Why not shoot these scenes also on the sets or artificial rain? When a huge portion of the film has already been shot on the sets, what harm will it do to ‘Tum Mile’ if the aforementioned scenes are also captured in the same mode? "Kunal (Deshmukh) is very particular about these scenes especially and is quite positive that actual rains will only elevate the proceedings. Since these are meant to be outdoor shots, it would look fake if we shoot with artificial rain", reasons Emraan, "In fact we were not anticipating such a situation because generally rains do arrive in Mumbai around this time. We are sitting ready with our cast, crew and equipment. It’s just a matter of a few days and we are willing to wait." ‘Tum Mile’ was originally slated for release in June/July timeframe to coincide with the Mumbai floods anniversary. However, due to the producers’ strike, the release timelines have now shifted to the month of September. In a way, this delay has been a blessing in disguise for ‘Tum Mile’ since the makers can now afford to take it easy, capture scenes the way they wanted and still release the film on time. "Whatever happens indeed happens for good", quips Emraan, "Since there are so many releases waiting in queue, we have to anyways wait for while before we hit the screens. Before that, Bhatt saab’s ‘Jashn’ is also releasing this July. Meanwhile, we continue to pray and hope that we can finish our job, complete the film and be ready for arrival this September." Starring Soha Ali Khan in the lead, ‘Tum Mile’ sees Kunal Deshmukh holding the mega phone once again after ‘Jannat’ (which again starred Emraan Hashmi). The film has music by Pritam and expected to arrive on 13th November.

Arjun Rampal not miffed with Farhan Akhtar

There have been a lot of rumours floating around in industry circles for quiet some time now that Arjun Rampal is quiet miffed with his Rock On co-star Farhan Akhtar. The reason it is being said that Arjun didn’t like Farhan hogging all the limelight post the film’s release. Apparently, buzz was also that despite having done a better job as an actor than Farhan in Rock On, Farhan managed more accolades since he was also the producer of the film and a media favourite. But it seems all these were nothing but idle mind planted gossip stories of a few tabloids. Arjun has clearly stated that all these rumours are nothing but crap and has further added that he has got enough credit and accolades for Rock On and so has Farhan. Arjun feels Farhan deserved it and that having worked with him as a director in Don he has a lot of respect for him. Arjun had earlier ventured into production with I See You but now it is learnt that he is going slow for his second production since he wants to concentrate more on his acting career.

AdnanSami: "I Was Working With Michael"

First his father and now fellow-musician Michael Jackson is gone in less than a week…This hasn’t been a good time for Adnan Sami.

"I was working on an album with Janet and Michael Jackson.I’m producing and composing the album. But now I wonder what happens to it!" wonders Adnan.

Describing Michael whom Adnan met a number of times for the album as a childlike genius, Adnan says, "His life was troubled. But his music was his solace. Artistes who suffer always seek an escape route in their art. Ask me,I should know"

When Adnan first received a phone call from Michael and the Jackson brothers they discussed Adnan’s music in detail. "The Jacksons knew every detail about my songs. They had studied my music in detail. I listened quietly to them talk about my music. These were the same guys whose music I grew up."

How did it happen? "Michael’s brother Jermaine’s wife Halima is from Afghanistan. For some time she lived in Chandigarh. She got acquaintedwith my music while in India and she took my music to LA and introduced her husband to it. And then Jermaine introduced Michael and Janet to my music."

Adnan had three meetings with the the Jacksons in Los Angeles. "It was progressing slowly. They like to work at their own pace.No hurry. The album is like Motown-music-meets-world-music-meets-Indian -music. I’ve brought the Sarangi and the Tabla-Dholak into their music."

It’s Adnan’s first English-language album, and being produced by the Jacksons.

Adnan is also singing one song in the album.

Speaking of the Jacksons Adnan says, "They’re very humble people. Always attentive to what I say, always open to innovations and suggestions. They recognized a component in my musical style, and that is this. I really like strong base lines in my songs. What they don’t know is, that’s something I learnt from the music of theJacksons."

This is the first full-fledged collaboration between an Asian musician and a major American nusical icon.

"I can’t believe I’m actually working with the Jacksons. Wiithout Michael it won’t be the same. We’ve completed four songs…I’m really enjoying this. I realize I enjoy playback singing. But the independent albums are where I’m totally able to express myself.

Akshay Kumar gives up IIFA for Family Holiday

Forget about performing live, Akshay Kumar won’t be attending the 10th IIFA awards in Macau next month.

June has been kept aside for the family vacation, and nothing in the world can change that.

Says a source close to Akshay, “The family vacation was planned well in advance to coincide with Akshay’s son Aarav’s school vacations. Akshay doesn’t like leaving Aarav behind when he is out of the country. At the same time he doesn’t want his son to miss school. So the annual holiday was planned well I advance. No power on earth, not even IIFA, is going to persuade Akshay to take even a small break from the holiday, let alone break his little boy’s heart.”

In fact it was suggested by IIFA organizers that Akshay fly down from wherever he was to Macau for the event. When Akshay refused to perform the organizers suggests he come down with to Macau with his wife and son just to attend.

Akshay wouldn’t relent.

Says the source, “Akshay planned the holiday for his son well in advance. The two sat together and decided which places to visit and what spots of the world would be of most interest to the boy. He rushed through his current assignments to keep June free. Nothing else matters at the moment.” - Subhash K Jha / Sampurn Media. Supply by oli

This ‘Don’ made Tom Hanks speak in Hindi

He was the man who played the role of a senior don (and an arch rival of Shah Rukh Khan and Boman Irani) in ‘Don - The Chase Begins Again’. Wait, that’s not all. He was also an integral part of recently released ‘Angels & Demons’. And the ‘Pirates’ series. And ‘Matrix Revolutions’. And many more Hollywood flicks. Well, he is Rajesh Khattar, the man who has made actors of the likes of Tom Hanks, Johhny Depp, Hugh Jackman, The Rock, Nicolas Cage, Lambert Wilson and many more talk in Hindi. As an experienced voice artist, he has dubbed for these Hollywood celebrities in Hindi.

“Well, there must have been close to 80 films where I have dabbled with Hindi dubbing for main leads in Hollywood films “, says Khattar whose latest assignment is ‘Angels & Demons’, where he is the voice of Tom Hanks (he had also dubbed for the actor in ‘The Da Vinci Code), “While I was quite active on television till some time back and have also been quite prominent on the plays circuit, currently I am concentrating on films. Ever since the the release of ‘Don - The Chase Begins Again’, further recognition has come my way and I am choosing my projects quite carefully.

So, the obvious question is - ‘What’s up next ?’
“Hey, you question sounds like Aamir Khan’s mobile ad”, smiles Khattar who got married to Vandana Sajnani (another popular name from Mumbai theatre circuit) last year, “I have quite a few movies lined up for release. There is Sagar Ballery’s ‘Kacha Limboo’, Tips’ ‘Prince Of Thieves’, Studio 18’s ‘Ishq Unpluuged’, Jagmohan Mundhra’s ‘Chase’, Isshaan Trivedi’s next and a few more. All these films are expected to release this year so hopefully I have an eventful second half of 2009 coming up.”

Is there any particular movie that he is banking on the most?
“All of them”, pats comes an expectedly diplomatic reply, “They are all good movies with contemporary subjects but then no one can predict that which out of these movies will find favour with the audience. I would just wish all of them to be super duper hits though.”

Meanwhile, what happens to TV? After all, till some time back, he was quite prominent on the television circuit!
“No, nothing really in near future! But hey, it’s not by choice. It’s just that no one has offered anything good for a while. I hope though that something interesting does come my way because I have enjoyed my TV stint for really long. I have always maintained I will never leave TV”, says Khattar. - Joginder Tuteja / Sampurn Media . Supply by oli

Fourth flop in a row for Saif Ali Khan

Believe it or not but in his only release of the year so far, Saif Ali Khan has delivered a box office disaster. Incidentally this is his fourth box office failure in a row over last 12 months, what with ROADSIDE ROMEO (where he did the voiceover), THODA PYAAR THODA MAGIC and TASHAN being mighty flops in themselves. Ok, so let’s reveal the suspense. This film in question is SANAM TERI KASAM, an age old project featuring Saif Ali Khan in lead along with Saif Ali Khan, which was revived a few days back and has expectedly went completely unnoticed. In fact majority of cast and crew members of the film were not even aware that SANAM TERI KASAM, which was earlier known as YEH PYAAR HI TO HAI, had even released on 22nd May 2009 at a mere 15 cinemas. Collections have been downright pathetic for this stuck-in-the-cans film with a mere 4 lakhs coming from these 15 cinemas. In fact the film’s release was akin to some of the old films like YEH LAMHE JUDAAI KE (starring Shah Rukh Khan), MUJHE MERI BIWI SE BACHAO (Akshay Kumar) and YAAR MERI ZINDAGI (Amitabh Bachchan) amongst many others which released decades after being made, arrived without fanfare and went back into cold storage without even completing a single weekend at the box office. An ULTRA film directed by Lawerence D’Souza (of SAAJAN fame), SANAM TERI KASAM was ready since the mid-90s. Incidentally, when the promos of the film were first released, two of its tracks had turned out to be big hits too. Tuned by Nadeem Shravan who had returned with Lawerence D’Souza once again after SAAJAN, these songs were ‘Ye Pyaar Hi To Hai’ and ‘Ek Baar Ek Baar Pyaar Se To Bol’. Finally, after a wait of a decade and a half, SANAM TERI KASAM managed to make it to theaters courtesy the producers’ strike due to which theaters were willing to screen any and every movie that was made available to them. With SANAM TERI KASAM not finding any takers in spite of Saif Ali Khan’s name being associated with the project, it won’t be hard to presume that producers as well as multiplexes would keep themselves miles away from reviving such dated films in future. HE has been the producer of various hits under our banner like Aitraaz, 36 China Town and Apna Sapna Money Money, which were three back to back blockbusters for Mukta Entertainment.
